Restore the DEMONcracy?

“Restoring democracy and peace in the country” is the tagline on Nepal made by various nations including the godfather of the world- US, our big bro- India, historical emperor of the world- England, and almost all the political parties of Nepal. Even the royal government speaks the same. Maoists have started to give indirect nod to the line. Nepalese staying in the developed world are also not lagging on that matter. And here I am, a common Nepali in Nepal, confused on what exactly it means.
I surely understand what peace is, and have got some concepts on democracy. Peace is what Buddha preached around the world and given the consent by people all over regardless of their religious stand. Democracy, in simplest word, talks about freedom everywhere under rule of law having large space for freedom again. US is the oldest democracy and India is the largest in terms of population. Not bad! The former is the strongest economy and latter, one of the fastest growing. So, let us not have any doubt on democracy….
But how does the same fits in context of Nepal? This is where I go nuts while trying to find the answer. We are talking about restoring the democracy (of course peace too). Nepal used to be a peaceful country and the world loved her because of that. They still love her and seem hopeful for restoration of peace. But which democracy we are about to restore? The democracy which gave birth to people’s army in jungle and took 15,000 lives? The democracy which converted the peace zone into a battle field? The democracy which made the hijackers, cons, street fighters, and college rowdies billionaires within short span of 10 years? The democracy which made “the country of Buddha” to “country of corrupted people”? The democracy which gave the authority to few leaders to sign off national resources (rivers) and inflate their personal accounts? Are we going to restore that democracy? Then let us not do that. That was not a democracy. That was demoncracy which claimed so many innocent lives, gave birth to thousands of refugees, and created an environment where citizens live in fear every next second in a country which has always been independent since history.
How can we even think of restoring the same system? If democracy means people in government are the most powerful, and they have all rights to lead the nation as per their desire, then I believe, today also we have democracy in the country. What is all the hue and cry about then? Otherwise, if it is really for the people and by the people, Nepal has never seen democracy. Then what are we going to restore? We are looking back when situation demands to look forward.
The rulers of the demoncracy are asking to restore their system- suck everything from the people and the nation. One might argue giving the commonly used analogy of Ratnakar turning into Balmiki. Our demons too could turn into saints and end the era of demoncracy welcoming democracy. We cannot ignore the possibility as nothing is impossible. But there should be some ground to become hopeful for anything. The demons were not ready to accept their mistakes until the king forced them to do so. When they were made powerless, and condition reached to the extreme that only around 500 people gathered for their protest against the royal takeover, then only they realized to make confession in front of the public. This shows their attitude towards the Nepali public. They never worked for the people but their foreign instructors.
Considered that is in past. What are they doing these days? They are giving the continuation to the tradition. They believe New Delhi can provide them the same rights to operate the injustices to Nepali people, hence, making one after other trips to Delhi. Maoists too, after realizing the degradation of their positioning in common people’s mind, have joined the bandwagon. The strict anti-Indian Nepali Maoists also don’t see any other way than turning towards Delhi. This is very unfortunate for Nepal and Nepali. This shows how fatal it could be to restore the demoncracy. The demons have not changed their old way. They didn’t confess by heart to the people. It was a weak attempt to gain back the sympathy from the Nepali people.
After royal takeover also, they never thought to go to people as they used to do after winning the election. They are slapping in the face of Nepali people indicating their zero-importance for democracy. So what kind of democracy they are trying to restore when the country people are of no importance?! Where is the ground for the people to trust the demons again? Had the demons been really serious about people and democracy, they would have started campaigns beneficial for general public rather than making serial visits to Delhi. Now its high time for the demons to understand that time has changed. Political consciousness of people has increased manifold than the decade of 40s and 50s. Nepalese are no fools to wait and see whatever the demons in the government do. Instead of letting the demons sell the rivers and regret afterwards for voting them as their representative, Nepalese today would prefer preventive measures of not having them back.
Democracy is not possible in Nepal with the same sick demon faces as they have proved that they were never borne for people but their own family and foreigners. Democracy could prove fruitful in Nepal only if it will have leaders who love their nation and the people and denies working for foreigners. What Nepal has seen till date is lack of such leadership under democratic system. This is where now its time to look forward and establish the real democracy, forget the past and stop crying for restoring so-called democracy. Nepal can never move towards prosperity if demoncracy is restored. Nepal is going through the worst crisis ever in her history and the demons are not showing any sign of changing themselves. She has become so delicate and fragile that once the demoncracy with same old demons is restored, it won’t take time to break her into pieces.
A fresh start with new people’s representatives is required. A reader converted leader is the need of the nation. Leaders who have studied the world and been to jail indeed are different from leaders who have hijacked, murdered and been to jail. Nepal had been led by the latter forms of leaders which gave birth to demoncracy. Now the future of the nation is in hands of the new generation who wants to establish democracy for the first time. The date expired hijacker turned leaders are lethal for the country and they love to live in past. So let us stop fretting for restoration of democracy which was never there. Instead, country is making a wake-up call for the new generation of readers to turn into leaders and lead the country to democratic path.
