Doodlebugs - Dirt Digger Bugs know as the Ant Lion Larva
Look around in your backyard where its sandy or there are soft dirts. If you see a whole that looks like a funnel, there could be a hard working insect waiting to trap anyone who falls in it. Doodle Bug is often written without the space like Doodlebug. It’s a cute little bug, has a small head yet a big body with ability to go into dirt with it’s but first. The color of its body is same as the dirt; brown. Kids love to watch’um as doodles dig or just stair at the holes they make, wondering what’s going on. Why the hole? Why they are so small yet they can dig deep and big holes, some time upto 3 inches deep? What do they eat? Let us learn more..
When touched or taken out of the hole, these insects fake death. They will lie still, down or belly up; often as long as it senses danger around.

Doodlebug making its home - the hole that looks like a small tornado then waiting for food (ants) getting it and eating it!
A few facts about doodlebug:
- Their proper name is Ant Lion Larva (Antlions)
- It prays on Ants and other insects and hence gets the name, Lion of Ants..Antlion
- They hide beneath their holes and when ants and other insects falldown, they attack, kill and eat.
- They help control population of the ants and other insects and are important part of our ecosystem.
- Once doodlebugs develop, they become similar to dragon files preying on ants and other insects.
- Doodlebugs get their name due to the shape that they create on the ground which resembles that of someone doodlling in sands.
- They create hole using their head puffing up the dirt or sand. The hole is surrounded with soft and puffy dirt. When an insect such as Ants gets into it, it can’t do nothing but sliding down beneath where lies the hungry mouth of doodlebug!

i like collecting doodlebugs and feeding them….. i have one that
is about the size of a 50c coin i feed it my leftovers.. Its name is dirty little digger… when its naughty i dont feed it.

i also like to eat digger bugs wen they get bigger i suck out their insides an put it on toast.
