A quick review of The Toothpick

It is unclear if this practice is for his self defense or it could be just his hobby. His girl friend is fed up of his practice and leaves him for life. From no where, a nature freak comes to the same location to shoot some nature films. In this place of nature, who could win, who loses, and how it all ends and what message you will get will depend on your prospective. What did you learn in this film ? Main Characters in the Film

After you have seen the above film, you might find the following reading interesting, but If you haven’t seen the film, please go back and watch.

Casts in order of their appearance in the film:

  • Ujang, an Indonesian by birth, Tech savvy guy with bunches of camcorders of all sorts on hand learning and testing new techniques with a hope to produce a produce a feature Indonesian FILM someday. He is the main character in this film. When I watched the film, I found too many scenes of him practicing perhaps we could have removed some, do you agree with me on this one ? But this was our first short-film so we said, what the heck, let’s keep what we have shot. This project made us take as many as 500 shots and only 100
  • Ruben, a Nepali, who does more than he handle; writing for websites, creating websites for others, filming, directing and also editing with whatever little resources he has which includes the basic computer and software)
  • Donna, An American, who loves to write poems, watches all sorts of movies and does pretty good in acting. In this film, I just told her what was required, she spoke and it only took 1 shot to get what I thought was great. You can spot her in 3 scenes in the film.

People behind the scenes

  • Toto, a friend of mine helped me do some shooting. He does exactly what you tell him and he does it perfectly too! No retake required with Toto
  • Ujang, the actor also assisted in getting some of the scenes where I wasn’t in the fight scene. I asked him to take that shot where a tree reveals me with a camcorder.
  • Wilianto Alex, an Indonesian who once was a band member for 11 years and a lawer by profession; plays alls sorts of music from Guitar to Piano to you name it! The fight and practice music were created with a lyric written by Ujang in Indonesian language. I will try to provide that lyrics translated into English soon, i.e. if you would like to read it, so comment to have that lyric.

How The Story Was Born ?

The story came to my mind when I thought about what would happen if someone were to use toothpick, and then the same toothpick were to be used by another person. I was laughing out loud with that ugly concept. In fact, there aren’t many people in this world who share a toothpick. Are there any ? Also, I love nature and knowing that the toothpick is also nature related, this story had to be elaborated and hence we created the film that fits both Entertainment as well as Comedy Category using Nature Theme. We did the film without any writing, no script, no planning and nothing at all. Something you shouldn’t do!! LOL!!

A few stuff to learn about toothpick

  • Charles Forster, is regarded as the founder of toothpick; In 1870, he manufactured world’s first toothpick from his factory in Boston, Massachusetts, United States
  • These days, almost all restaurants carry toothpicks for their customers. More so in places where meats such as steaks and chickens are offered in the menu which gets stuck in between our tooth when eating. I often think about where do people keep the stuff they take out from their teeth after toothpick? LOL!! Every one grabs for a couple of toothpicks and hence to keep them hygienic, toothpick boxes dispense one toothpick at a time.
  • Wood toothpicks are more popular than plastic since plastic made are regarded as tougher on gums. That is a surprise don’t you think so ? Well toothpick must be firm, perhaps the plastic ones aren’t elastic but tough as the woods, which could be the reason why wood toothpicks remain as the better choice.
  • Toothpicks are made from Birch Tree Woods. Good size woods are selected, woods are then sliced, by manufacturing plants, which makes them into tiny sticks that we call toothpick. Factories take precautions to make sure that every Toothpick passes through hygiene test before they reach to consumers. They are shipped in closed containers upon toothpicks are boiled or dried or treated with chemicals to counteract any contaminations that might have had from shipment of raw woods to the final manufacturing process.

What is The Health Benefit of Toothpicks ?

  • Toothpick, if used safely can remove plaque and food particles from teeth and it stimulates the gums thus helping our teeth last longer. Toothpick is not an alternative to daily tooth-brush.
  • When you are in a restaurant, it is a common practice to use toothpick after you have finished eating your meal. You may be offered them when your bill is placed on your table or can be obtained at the cash registry. If you can’t find one, ask for it with the cashier.
  • Be careful, Don’t hurt your tooth or use toothpick for other than often to remove food particles. Don’t hurt your gum! ouch! ouch! ouch! If a food particle can’t be removed with a toothpick, use floss instead.

  4. Thanks for the tip on camera work. It would great Sudhir if you could explain in detail where the faults where. I could learn. Also the fight had to be lame since extreme violence would be against the terms of use of youtube so I tried to make the fight seen somehow a bit funny or rather odd. I am now working on two more films. If you like you can subscribe to the channel
    http://www.youtube.com/user/k6yardotcom
and watch those two films before anyone else does!! haha!

Sudhir thank you so much for watching and giving me your input.
BTW, where do you live? A bit of a personal question, if you live around the area (details on the channel) we could work together for a film. It’s hard to make films with limited budget or no money at all. Wouldn’t you agree ?

    Thank you all.

  7. Well, this was just an experiment… for youtube YOU CAN’T MAKE A VIDEO WITH VIOLENCE, so I HAD to keep it lame. I personally also don’t like my work. But since this was my first work ever, I’m keeping it. I’m working on a new one, only for this site. Thanks for watching.
